Blogs
Blogs are about opinions. An individual blog is generally personal or specific, but in groups, bloggers create a range of discussion on virtually any topic you can imagine.
The Biggies
Daily Kos: State of the Nation
This is the blog that broke through to mainstream awareness during the 2004 Presidential primaries. Markos Militos leads a core team of writers that post relentlessly. But what makes it SO big is that it's a community of bloggers, each with a separate diary. If a particular diary "gains traction" with a story, it goes to the main blog.
Huffinton Post
HuffPo has really come on strong in the last couple of years. They are an emerging power to watch. Dave Winer, one of my favorite dot commies, cross-posts on both www.scripting.com and HuffPo.
Consumer Topics
MyStarbucksIdea
Some say it's m ore blog than social network. Others say it's just a giant, digital suggestion box. However you define it, MyStarbucksIdea is one of the few direct company-to-consumer conversations outside of the software industry. After just a few weeks of operation, the company has begun to implement suggestions.
Check out our current blogs: - Whole Foods Market Blogs
Whole Foods offers a variety of blog, including one from CEO John Mackey, the infamous Rahodeb. One problem with CEO blogs is that it's unclear how often it is ACTUALLY the CEO that posts and not a VP/Marketing or some other employee. Regardless, his Board of Directors placed a "hold" on his blog over the summer. They say it's temporary.
Farm to Market Slide Show Blog - Discovering the rural roots of southern growers and producers.
This is a brilliant program where vendors either submit still photos and audio or create their own slideshows. Very direct, very personal, very human. I am surprised that there are not more examples from more parts of the country.
Product Feedback Is Worth Your Time | Wise Bread
Here's a post on a consumer-oriented blog that explores the upside of providing customer feedback to companies. In the comments, you'll see how consumers actively praise the companies that have offered sincere engagement. This is the upside of Web 2.0.
Ask Patty - Female Friendly Certified Dealer Search
Ask Patty is a blog to help women with their cars. How obvious is that? They have a simple certification regime they use to make sure dealerships give women a fair shake. How many are signed up in the Providence area? Zero.
CarBlabber Review - 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited
Ask Patty users can submit reviews of cars. Here, a salesman at a dealership gives his review, and he does it right. He clearly identifies himself, and the review has some substance and is not entirely BS.
Industries
forklift blog - Google Search
This Google search again turns up a rich variety of blogs on the topic.
NAHETS Blog
Wanna learn to drive forklifts, bucket loaders, and all kinds of giant machines. This is the blog for you. Published by the National Association of Heavy Equipments Training Schools, it covers their organization and their industry.
Forklift » Blog Archive » Daewoo Forklift
This is a splog - a spam blog. This content is just shoveled from brochures and other sources. This blog has no point of view and adds no value. It is designed to rank highly in search engines, and it does. These are cheaters that Google hasn't caught up with yet. With the high search ranking, they generate pageview and, therefore, advertising impression. 100% of users realize that they've been had. Some, however, will click the ad generating revenue for the sploggers.
Agency Spy
Agency Spy
Agency Spy is the advertising industry's worst nightmare. They actively solicit anonymous tips about the shenanigans going on in the creative suite. Very human-centric and feminine in its voice, Agency Spy focuses on the people that drive the industry. They are funny to watch. This site is in the process of moving from one host to another, so it's a bit discombobulated circa December '07. [April '08 - Unable to effectively implement commenting on the new platform, Agency Spy continues to publish at the link above and simultaneously on the corportate site.
After Suicide, Blog Insults are Debated
On February 22, 2008, advertising executive Paul Tilley leapt from an upper floor of Chicago's Fairmont Hotel. Tilley had run DDB-Chicago, part of McCann-Erikson, a frequent target of Agency Spy. Individually, Tilley had been under direct fire from the blog over a long period of time. His suicide forced the question: did this blog drive this man to suicide. The answer: no.
