Forums

The Breakthrough
Introducing the New Yahoo! Finance Stock Message Boards
Yahoo's financial message boards were an early mainstream success for forums on the web, as opposed to traditional BBS (bulletin board service). They helped drive Yahoo user counts to ever higher levels.
Personal Interests
personal finance message board - Google Search
This is the first page of the Google search for these keywords: personal, finance, message, board. Notice that you see forums run by major information companies (MSN, Yahoo), but no banks, mortgage companies, brokerages, etc.
BigSoccer - soccer store, soccer forums, soccer community, soccer blogs
BigSoccer is the dominant soccer discussion forum in the US and UK. While major sports networks could provide a similar service, BigSoccer provides the best source for highlight clips and other fan-oriented video. As a regular at New England Revolution games, I've been on a few times. My son is constantly on these boards.
Home Brewing
This message board about brewing beer appears to have grown out of the old Use-Net. Note "alt-dot" nomeclature of the bulk of the posts.
Sleep Apnea
Health issues are an area where communities form to share information. This sleep apnea site is hosted by the American Sleep Apnea Association. I have yet to uncover meaningful engagement from pharmaceutical companies.
Industries
automotive repair message board - Google Search
Another Google search. Again, note who the players are and who the players aren't.
Haynes Message Board - Powered by vBulletin
Haynes publishes quality repair manuals for cars, superior to their competition Chilton. Haynes has already shown leadership in this category by raising the quality of their industry's product. Now they extend that leadership into Web 2.0. A model.
